Cultivation of Date Palm, (Phoenix sylvestris Roxb.) and its Impact on Rural Livelihood, a case study from Muksudpur Upazila in Gopalganj District






ABSTRACT

An exploratory study was conducted in Gopalganj, a southern district of Bangladesh to explore the study on Cultivation of Date palm (Phoenix sylvetris, Roxb.) and its impacts on rural livelihood. A total of 48 households in the Gobindapur village with a 20% sampling intensity were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire.The Date palm was distributed over seven different geographical sites of which orchard supported the most (20.51%).The farmers of High income group category managed the highest Date palm(46.46%) and the Low income group managed the lowest (22.73%). The palms in the agricultural fields and in the ails within >7-14 years of age produce the highest amount of juice (2500ml on an average, each noght). Though the highest average seasonal income (TK36280 .00) from the Date palm products was found for the High income group farmers, (44.61%) for the Low income group farmers in their mean annual income. The Date palm husbandry would be a promising source of rural economy in Bangladesh, if managed more scientifically with a collaboration of the farmers indigenous technology.
