Abstract

The study described the present status of stock of trees, status of regeneration and non wood forest products (NWFPs) and the socio-economic condition of Sunamganj range, Sylhet Forest Division. Present growing stock and quantitative structure of tree species of sunamganj range, Sylhet, Bangladesh is not very satisfactory. In the present study multistage random sampling was followed. There are six beats under Sunamganj range of which four beats were randomly selected. The sampling intensity was 67%. From each beat ten plots were randomly selected for stock plant survey, from each plot of stock plant survey one plot were randomly selected for regeneration survey. For non wood forest products namely bamboo, cane and murta survey, ten plots were randomly selected from each beat. In case of socio economic survey 55 respondents were randomly selected from four beats in Sunamganj range. The study ascertains that in the study area there are 5 species under 3 families. The dominant family is leguminosae having two species followed by Myrtaceae, Capparidaceae (one species). The study ascertains that in the study area dominant species is Akashmoni (Acacia auriculiformis) and Mangium (Acacia mangium willd).in Sunamganj range respectively. Several other species such as Hijal, Karach, and Borun also present in the range. There is no natural stock present in Sunamganj range. The best performance shows the akashmoni in 1999-00 under Sunamganj range. Its density is about 1200 stems per hectare, average basal area is about .007 m2 and average dbh is 8.97 cm and height is 11.63 m respectively. In the case of mixed plantation Hijal shoes the best performance within 2006-07 plantations, having 680 stems per/ha, .0000999 m2 and .785m and 1.11 cm of height, basal area, and DBH respectively, followed by Borun (.767 cm,.586m, .000049 m2, 750) showing average DBH, height, basal area, stem/ha respectively. Species composition of the study area which are not only suitable as economic but also enriches the biodiversity situation in the local to national arena. There is no regeneration and no tourism facilities in the study area. The main occupations of the people are Day labour and main secondary occupation is agro farming. Maximum percentage (67.27%) of house is made of mud, followed by sungrass/bamboo (27.28%).And very few amount of tin shed house is present in the study area.
