Land is the most valuable possession of mankind. It is also an important asset of any country as well. The wealth of the nation and its economic development are dependent on the state of the land and its usage. So the vital information about the land is of great importance.

Land Information system (LIS):

According to Rao and Shekhar (2000) LIS may be defined as a computer based solution for addressing the requirements of Land Records Management System.

It attempts to maintain, preserve and analysis records in computer from accruing in the numerous benefits associated with this technology.

LIS or Land information system is defined as the technology for the appraisal of the land resources in terms of their potential and limitations.

It is similar to GIS but is more focused on land records and detailed views of this records.

The major considerations that should be carefully counted for the land resources information are:

(i) Land type,

(ii) Land capability,

(iii) Crop suitability

(iv) Present land use.

Classes of land Information:

There are various types of land information, which can broadly be classified with following categories:

· Geological information like shape, size, land forms, minerals and soil.

· Economic information like land use, irrigation, crops etc.

· Legal rights, registration, and taxation etc.
