Management & Utilization of problem soils

Aesthetic & ornamental planting in urban areas……………………………………………………

Site conditions in urban areas:

· The site conditions are more rigorous in town planting than in planting along the highways.

· The roads are usually much narrower, the rootspace available in limited in panel areas, drains, sewerage, system & underground services for gas, water, electricity & telephones.

· Crown space is also limited by telephone & electric transmission lines.

· The soil on city roads, parks, & house compounds frequently consists of building debris.

· Very often top soil has been removed & sub soils are exposed.

Aesthetic planting:

· Aesthetic planting are generally means planting exact species on exact site.

· It is for providing amenity & ornament beauties in cities & towns.

· However, in developed countries, it has already been realize that cities of monumental building & roads are unpleasant places to live unless the monotony relieved by plants of open spaces & greenery.

Factors governing choice of species for Aesthetic planting………………………………………………

a) The species should be well adapted to the climatic conditions of locality.

b) The size & shape of the tree should be suited to the place.

c) Narrow & pyramidal sloped crown trees should be planted in narrow lands & large trees with spacing crown should be planted in margins of wide roads.

d) Trees may be chosen for the color of their flowers. Ex—red sissoo for shape.

e) The trees planted should not drop untidy litter.

f) Fruit trees should not be planted on the urban roads sides as there is an additional risk of stones throwing.

g) Trees should be moderately fast growing.

h) The wood of trees should not be brittle as branches may be broken off wind & cause traffic accidents.

i) Deciduous species should be avoided in tropical condition as they offer less shade & more leaf fall.

Planting aesthetic & ornamental plantation…………………………………………………………………………

· Before planning, a map of the area to be planned is required showing the position of roads, footpaths, houses, telephone wires, poles, gas lines & others structure likely to affect the growth of trees.

· The position of each trees to be planted should be marked on the sketch while fixing the position of each trees, care should be taken to ensure that the following are maintained.

· The size of the tree is suited to the locality. Large trees should not be planted in front of houses & under telephone & electric transmission lines.

· Fast growing trees should be planted near walls; houses etc, as their root are liable to damage the structure.

· Trees should be sited as not to block any important view or shut out too much light.

· Group of 3-5 trees of the same species should be planted where there is room for them & they are often more effective than single trees.

· The seasonal aspect should be borne in mind so that as far as possible shade & color are always present.

Roadside plantation

Objectives of roadside plantation………………………………………..

· To provide shade to the traffic & passerby’s during hot season.

· To beautify the landscape or color the landscape.

· To give income to the state.

· To conserve soil& stabilize the road embanks.

Site conditions of roadside plantation ……………………………………..

· The soil for road side plantation is usually better than that of hills & coastal areas.

· The drainage condition is usually good because the roadside embankments are generally raised from normal grown level.

Choice of species for roadside plantation …………………………………………

· Usually the species suitability for roadside plantation varies from place to place.

· A wider variety of species can be planted in Bangladesh condition based on the adaptability of the species.

Criteria governing the selection of species of roadside plantation ……………………………………………

· Where species permits the tree should have a spreading shady crown, so that it can shade the center of the road in addition to the sides.

· Trees should have a moderately fast rate of growth.

· It should be wind firm & its limbs should not be unduly liable to breakage by wind, so that it will not constitute a hazard to traffic.

· It should be preferably of economic importance.

· Fruit trees are not recommended on the highway sides.

· Both the amenity & coastal beauty should be taken into consideration when choosing species.
