Forest soil |
Forest soil profile………………………………..
A typical well developed forest soil profile consists of 4 horizons. These ares-----
1. Organic horizon (O)
2. Alluvial horizon (A)
3. Zone of accumulation (B)
4. Unaltered parent materials (C)
Organic horizon:
· Formed over the mineral horizon.
· Most distinctive features of virgin natural forest.
· Depending on the stage of decomposition, the forest floor can be further subdivided onto litter horizon (L), a partially fermented horizon (F) and H horizon, consisting well decomposed amorphous organic matter or humus.
Alluvial horizon (A):
· Formed below the organic horizon.
· Weathered substances or minerals are deposited & organic residues are very small quantities.
Zone of accumulation (B) :
· Also a mineral horizon below the alluvial horizon.
· It is a zone of accumulation of compounds such as iron, aluminum, gypsum, sesquioxides, calcium carbonate etc.
Unaltered parent materials:
· This remains outsides all sorts of soft activities & weathered process.
Compare the characteristics of soil under broadleaf & coniferous forests…………………………..
· Mull humus is formed under broadleaf forests while mor humus is formed under coniferous forests.
